ROKN radar malfunctions 238 times in the last five years

According to reports revealed at the National Assembly Inspection of State Affairs, ROKN radars have malfunctioned 238 times in the past five years, strongly driven by old radars used beyond their useful life. 106 failures were from ground-based radar, among which 70% were “GPS-100” radar fielded in 1988. In addition, due to limitations in repair personnel, an average of 2.5 days was required to wait for repairs. A newer version of the radars was developed following the sinking of ROKS Cheonan, but ROKN was found to still use older radars without intentions of developing new radar.
